小田急ロマンスカー50000形「ＶＳＥ」営業運転開始。一番列車は新宿9：00発→箱根湯本10：25着の「スーパーはこね9号」。新宿駅では出発式を、小田原駅と箱根湯本駅では到着式をそれぞれ行った。

福岡県西方沖地震が発生。それまで大地震が少ないと考えられていた九州北部での地震を受け、日本中で地震･防災への関心が高まった。
